DMV Knowledge/Permit Testingā
DMV Knowledge/Permit Testing Learner's permit testing is offered by appointment only at the DMV. You can make your appointment at CT.GOV/DMV.
What to do:
- If you have a Connecticut-issued non-driver photo ID card, you have the option to exchange it without bringing all your identity documents to DMV. If you do not, please follow the instructions below.
- Study for the learner's permit knowledge test by reading the DMV Manual. You can do practice tests online at https://dmv-permit-test.com
- Collect all documents required as acceptable forms of identification.
- Bring completed Application for Non-Commercial Learner's Permit and/or Driver's License (form R-229). *This form will be e-mailed to you
- If you are under 18 and your parent/legal guardian is not present at the time of the knowledge test, bring completed Certificate of Parental Consent (form 2-D).
- Glasses or contact lenses if needed for testing.
- Pass a Vision Test and a 25-question Knowledge Test for the permit. *If you fail the vision test, you will not be able to proceed to the knowledge test and will be required to reschedule.
What it will cost:
- $40 for testing fee ā covers vision, knowledge and road tests.
- $19 for learnerās permit. *To be paid online when you schedule the test
Once you obtain a learner's permit:
- Follow the specific laws for your age group..
- Once you have held your permit for the required amount of time, schedule your road test at the DMV website or at the driving school of your choice if you are 16-21 years old.
You will not receive a permanent driver license or ID card while at a DMV or AAA office. It will arrive through the mail. You will keep your expiring license/ID and receive a temporary paper card.
